A significant piece of research undertaken in late 2007-2008 provides insight on the current state of health of ERM in the insurance industry. This report is a follow-up to a study published in 2004. The aim was to provide a detailed picture of industry attitudes to ERM, while also examining the progress being made from one institution to the next. This survey has been designed to shed some light on the areas that the industry stakeholders - particularly the regulators and rating agencies are placing their emphasis.

As an updated version of the benchmarking exercise it provides an independent and objective view of the maturity of one's firm's ERM programme relative to one's peers. Our latest strudy raises important questions whether ERM is sufficiently embedded in and relevant to the business. And, if it can meet the demands of and increasingly complex risk environment and ever more exacting investor, regulator and rating agency expectations.
