Gazprom Neft and PwC Russia will jointly develop cognitive technologies for oil production

Saint Petersburg, June 3, 2021 – Gazprom Neft will develop intelligent digital solutions for geology and oil production together with PwC Russia. The memorandum of strategic cooperation was signed at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum by Vadim Yakovlev Deputy CEO for Exploration and Production, Gazprom Neft, and Igor Lotakov, Managing Partner, PwC Russia and Eurasia.

Gazprom Neft uses self-learning programs, neural networks, artificial intelligence, and advanced methods for processing large amounts of information in many of its business processes. For example, in 2019, for the first time in the world, the company's self-learning digital system helped discover new oil reservoirs. At the Vyngapurovsky oil field in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District, after analyzing more than 60 thousand parameters of geophysical studies, the program determined the location of reserves from which an oil inflow was obtained without creating additional infrastructure. The company also uses advanced digital solutions to optimize well drilling, control the operation of equipment in the fields, geological research and logistics.

PwC Russia actively increases its expertise in the development of digital technologies, successfully integrates it into traditional business consulting. Serious investments in this area have allowed the firm to attract a large number of experienced experts in the field of digital technologies, strengthening technological practices.

The companies will create joint centers of expertise for the development of technological and digital products for the oil and gas industry. Cooperation based on these centers will help to combine the resources of Gazprom Neft and PwC Russia to create new and develop existing technologies in the field of cognitive geology and digital tools for optimizing business processes.

"We are focused on creating breakthrough solutions that can fundamentally change production processes across the industry. Digital tools play a big role in this work. Among them is our project "Cognitive Geologist" – a new IT platform for the analysis of uncertainties in geological exploration and the construction of conceptual geological models. This product includes advanced methods of applying artificial intelligence and the experience of our employees accumulated over many years of work in the company's fields. By combining our expertise with the global expertise of PwC, we will form a new approach to the processing of geological information".

Vadim Yakovlev, Deputy CEO for Exploration and Production, Gazprom Neft

"Innovation for oil and gas companies means maintaining investment attractiveness and improving the efficiency of all business processes. Only new ideas and technologies can ensure progressive development. Strategic cooperation with Gazprom Neft will allow us to jointly create an environment in which business and technology are organically combined, and this will significantly accelerate the implementation of important solutions for production".
